CalcGST

Tax invoice maker

A tax invoice that carries every field.

Fill it in, watch the GST work itself out, and print to PDF. We check the document for the fields the ATO expects — and if you are not registered for GST, it quietly becomes a plain invoice instead.

Tax invoice or just an invoice?

The distinction matters. Only a business registered for GST issues a tax invoice showing GST. If you are not registered you issue an ordinary invoice with no GST on it.

Putting a GST amount on an invoice when you are not registered means collecting tax you have no entitlement to collect. Untick the registration box and this tool changes the heading, removes the GST line, and states plainly that no GST has been charged.

Why the cents always add up

GST is applied to the invoice total, not to each line. Rounding each line separately is how a ten-line invoice ends up a cent out from its own total — the kind of error a bookkeeper will send back.

Numbering

Invoice numbers should be unique and sequential. The tool remembers the last number you used on this device and offers the next one, keeping your prefix and padding: INV-0042 becomes INV-0043.

What this is not

It makes the document. It does not send it, chase payment, reconcile a bank feed or lodge a BAS. And it is not tax advice — whether you should be registered, and whether a particular sale is taxable, are questions for the ATO or a registered tax agent.

Invoice questions

What has to be on an Australian tax invoice?

For sales under $1,000 the ATO expects: the words tax invoice, your business name, your ABN, the date issued, a description of what was sold, and the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST). At $1,000 or more you must also identify the buyer by name or ABN.

Can I issue a tax invoice if I'm not registered for GST?

If you are not registered you do not charge GST, and the document is an invoice rather than a tax invoice. Calling it a tax invoice, or showing a GST amount you did not charge, is a real problem. Untick Registered for GST above and the heading and totals change to match.

Do I need an ABN on an invoice?

A tax invoice must show the supplier's ABN. If you invoice a business without quoting an ABN, the payer may be required to withhold tax from the payment, so it is in your interest to include it.

How do I show GST on an invoice?

Either list the GST amount as a separate line, or state that the total includes GST. Showing it separately is clearer and is what this tool does by default.

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no limit. It runs in your browser, and your business details are saved only on your own device.

Where are my details stored?

In your browser's local storage, on the device you used. They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes them, and they do not follow you to another device.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Use the print button, then choose Save as PDF as the destination. The page is styled so only the invoice prints — no menus, no buttons.

Does this track payments or send invoices?

No. It produces the document. Sending, chasing and reconciling payments is what accounting software is for. This is for people who need a correct invoice, not a subscription.
