Keep the calculation precise until the rounding step
Money displayed in Australian dollars normally uses two decimal places. Intermediate arithmetic can produce fractions of a cent. CalcGST parses decimal input directly into whole cents, rounding a third decimal digit of five or more up. For example, entering 1.005 is treated as $1.01.
For a fully taxable $10 total, GST is $10 divided by 11. Rounded to cents, that is $0.91. Subtracting that from $10 produces $9.09 before tax, so the displayed figures still reconcile.
Why totals can disagree
Consider three separate exclusive prices of $0.15. Calculated separately, each produces $0.02 GST after rounding, for $0.06 overall. Combining them first gives $0.45, with $0.045 GST rounded to $0.05.
The difference is the rounding sequence, not the percentage. The ATO describes rounding methods for invoices with multiple taxable supplies. Use an appropriate method consistently and preserve the supplier’s tax invoice rather than replacing its GST figure with an unrelated calculation.
How our tools handle it
The main calculator handles one amount. The bulk calculator handles each entered amount separately and adds the rounded results. The invoice maker first rounds each quantity-times-unit-price extension to cents, combines taxable lines, and calculates the document’s GST from that taxable amount.
On mixed invoices, GST-free and input-taxed amounts do not enter the taxable pool. The final total adds taxable and non-taxable amounts after the GST calculation. This explains why the bulk tool and invoice maker can differ by a cent on very small values.
Reconcile before you adjust
When checking a difference, compare the tax basis, quantities, unit-price precision and taxable lines first. Then compare rounding. A missing item or incorrectly selected tax treatment can look like a rounding problem while being much larger.
If your accounting system follows a different supported rounding method, retain a clear audit trail. Do not add an unexplained item to force a match. Ask your adviser how adjustments should be represented in your records.
Common questions
Why is bulk GST different from GST on the combined total?
The bulk calculator rounds each entered amount separately. Combining amounts before rounding can change the total by a cent or more.
